Fender Precision. Well any Fender really. Although B.C.Riches and Gibson T-Birds have a pose factor like no other. Or a top end Warwick, Alembic, Ritter, WAL, Ken Smith, Zon, or any other mega-buck handcrafted piece of art for the 'chorus of angels' effect every time you open the case in the company of people who appreciate such things.
The real answer is 'horses for courses', or maybe 'how long is a piece of string?'.

EDIT: Go check the 'Basses you covet but can't afford' thread a couple of pages back for a variety of answers!

Spector > all > turd > Gibson Thunderbird

Custom Thunderbirds are flat out awesome when done well, but Gibson's T-bird is garbage

There is no 'best' brand.

Sure Fenders have the two most well known basses (the Jazz and Precession) but its the tone and feel you want which determined the best bass.

Warwicks, for example, are known for having a lot of 'growl', far more than any Fender.

Hell, if a Wal-Mart first act gives you the tone of your dreams, thats the right bass for you. Just go and try some out and pick whichever you prefer.

If a First Act gives you the tone of your dreams, you need to quit kidding yourself and go become a left handed drummer.

Yeah honestly there is no best company. Fender is most likely the most IMPORTANT, but thats not the best.

Seriously, no offence, but asking which is the best bass manufacturer is a silly question. People have their opinions, we're all different, and there's too many out there to choose from. Just keep trying them and have fun.

I hate that bass with passion.

I love all Japanese made Fender basses.
MusicMan is nice but a higher price.

Well, as a Fender owner, I'm a bit biased! But I do own two non-fenders, and have owned various others. Never mind all the wasted hours trying stuff in guitar shops.
My P-bass is my jack-of-all-trades. It's never let me down, or left me wanting in any major way. Non-players recognise the logo, and know it means rock. To them, it looks right. It's just a down-to-earth honest-to-god thumpy bass!
But, hell, you might as well ask what the best car/motorbike/beer/drug/film/album/era of architecture is, for all the answer will be worth! That's my personal opinion from many years of bass playing, but it might not suit you . Keep trying stuff until one day you find your answer.

I know those first act are appaling, I was just making a point.

Tone is purely subjective. No way to quantify it, only opinion

I personally like Ibanez because i have a tiny budget and the gsr range is very good value for money. I could always get a job and get something new though, but im happy with my ibanez. ive not tried any other basses though bar a Stagg bass which i had for two years (no idea what one, but it was cheap and indestructable but very quiet and not great to play) and the schools Jim Deacon Fender immitations (useless for slap bass and the strings are way too close to the pickguard).

Im probably not the best to get an opinion off of though.

There are several things to consider regarding how a Bass is rated/valued etc.
If it's a buget Bass is it value for money.
If it's not a Fender will it hold its price when you trade up.
Is it a one trick pony.
I would go with Fender initialy because some of their bottom end instruments are ecellent value for money and you usualy get a better deal trading in a Fender, When you go up market things open up much more; Musicman, Rickenbacker etc.
Unless its your Bass for life I would avoid small expensive names where the instruments are usualy custom built.
