You need lots of minor chords and eddie vedder singing for you

I never really thought any of his songs were that sad. I always thought Vedder was an awesome singer, but his sad songs never really struck a chord with me.

Did you idiots even read his post?
He asked for stereotypical sad song elements, not for you to list sad songs.

They're listing songs with those components. Either TS can listen to the songs and derive what makes them good or he can put the songs together and eliminate what factor(s) they don't have in common and is therefore left with the winning combination.

On topic, I'd say soldier of fortune by deep purple.

Anything off of Above and Blind Melon's s/t album is sad as hell.

Seriously, listen to Long Gone Day, or even November Hotel by Mad Season, or the ever classic No Rain or Tones of Home by Blind Melon.

Sooooo good. RIP Layne and Shannon

But as to what is NEEDED to make a sad song? Slow minor chords, deep voices, and soft acoustic/slightly overdriven solos.
Catch me,
heal me,
Lift me back up to the Sun
