Is there a mode that sounds bright, but has kinda a lopsided edge to it? (I don't know if you'll understand that question..)

I'm writing a song for my band and I just don't know what mode or key to put it in. The last one I wrote was in C minor to give it a darker feeling, but for this one I want it to sound brighter, but still kinda off, in a way.

Any suggestions?

If I were you I would check out Epic`s post in this thread: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...ad.php?t=671610, then post your remaining questions.

Edit: And I`ve just saw the sticky, edit for shame.

There really should be a sticky on modes, since it`s probably the most common question on these forums.

Is this a joke?

well I already know about all the modes and such, I just don't want to play through all 7 modes in all 12 keys (84 scales) to find one particular sound. I was wondering if anyone already knew of one/used one that I could start off my search at.

Edit: By the way, there is a sticky on modes. :P (Not just modes, but a lot of things..)

Well, i`m not exactly sure what you mean by "lopsided" but you could try playing through the major scale, adding chromatics or accidental`s, which you may not be able to find until you learn all the notes that belong first. I really wouldn`t recommend skipping information.

Perhaps Lydian? Lydian Dominant? or variations on Mixolydian such as Mixolydian b5, etc...

you know, the sound of a mode will be the same in any key... because sound is all relative to what you are listening to.

if the major modes arent giving you what you need, then try modes of the melodic and harmonic minors.
i guess pentatonics may be helpful...

just play them all in the same key until you find the one you need.
