I'm interested in starting to listen to jazz music, but I've no idea where to start. I want to start with the kind of jazz that is reminiscent of the style of Tom Waits, particularly the song Diamonds on my Windshield. Thanks for any advice

You should start with the standard names and then try to find what you really like from that. Start with ragtime, move on to dixieland, then to big-band, then smaller groups, then to free jazz, then to fusion. The popular names, you ask? Miles Davies, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gilespie and so on.
