I have just brought a dobro and really want to learn slide guitar. i understand the technique and what not but am unsure if there are any scales in slide guitar or do you just make up the riffs.

learn songs...

I kind of thought the same thing as you when i wanted to learn slide but i had a couple of zep tabs with slide parts and just learned them. Zep are particularly good for standard tuning slide as well as alternate tunings. Try some son house, zz top, robert johnson or basically anyone you like and the more you learn the more techniques and ideas you'll pick up and the better your phrasing will get.
