hey people,

i'm thinking of upgrading to broadband. I'm currently using telstra dial-up, before i change i want to know how many downloads i need. i was wondering if you guys knew of a good internet usage monitor so i can get an idea of how many downloads i need. any recommendations?

How many downloads? I think you mean your download limit.

They cap download limits by size, not amount.

well if you download alot then your going to need a high download limit. if your playin online games all the time u will need a high limit.. if your just surfing the web and talking on msn and such you could mostly survive with a low limit, anther thing.. get ur broadband a shape, that means if u go over your limit, rather then costing you a heap of money per Mb you download ur net will be slowed to 64k till the next month

yeh i was thinking maybe 1-5 GB of download. i don't know if that will be enough though. i just want a tool that i can use to see how much i use at the moment with my dialup so i can get a rough idea of the download limit i need with broadband. i just want enough so i can download a few video's and do general web surfing. it's not like i'll constantly be downloading massive movies. what do you think?

well if ur isp is like mine then you can log into statictis page and it will show you everything. eg: here is mine for this month

Time (display) 515.2 hour(s)
Data (incoming) 5014.609 Mb
Data (outgoing) 1520.503 Mb

get the plan with optus as follows:
you get 7GB on-peak (12pm-12am)
and another 14GB off-peak (12am-12pm, but you lose the off peak if you use up the 7GB on-peak)
all that for $50 p/m =]

works for me, i watch my fair share of youtube vids AND im a gamer so i download mods, updates, etc. and i sometimes go over the limit (like now lolz ) but even at the 64K speed its still usable.
