My other guitarist in my band just got a nice half stack a 150 crate head with a 75w 4x12 cab. we are just getting in to playing gigs and i was wondering since i just have a 75w line 6 spider will i need a cab to hook it up to so that he doesn't drown me out or will i be fine with just my one speaker when we play gigs.

First of all, the crate isn't a nice amp. Second of all, plugging your amp into a cab won't give it *that* much more volume, if you want a better sounding and louder sounding amp, buy a nice used tube combo and you will completely destroy his crate in every way, shape and form.

And it'll probably be cheaper than what he paid for his halfstack.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

If he runs a 150W head thru a 75W cab, he'll quickly blow the speakers and you'll be plenty louder than him. So no problem.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.

If you must* get a cab, you'll save money by getting a 212 rather than a 412, and you'll save even more money by not needing pain killers after lugging a 412 around.

* "must" being VERY subjective
