I want to tune my guitar to a open A tuning, but you have to tune the B string up a whole note to a C#. When tuning the strings up to a higher note, will the strings take the tension or will they snap??
Try tuning to open G and putting a capo on the second fret

If you have to tune up, I guess you should try with fairly light strings. And be sure to get some spares.
If you have to tune up do it to a tone at the very most. After that you're playing with fire.
You'll be fine to tune up a tone.
In fact, most guitars can safely be tuned up a minor third without risk of permanent damage as long as they're not left there for extended periods of time.
