I'm in a metal band that uses harsh vocals. Basically, My vocalist has a good voice. He can go from black metal screech to death metal growl and can hold one forever, but he can't show emotion in his voice. It has no power.

What can I do to get him to show more emotion in his voice?

Tell him, then let him practice.

Getting a new singer is a stupid idea.

I would assume the TS has already talked to his singer about it.

Some people just don't get the whole emotion thing.

Give him some ideas and examples of emotion in the voice and let him work on getting there.
So good to see you once again.
I thought that you were hiding.
And you thought that I had run away.

if he has no passion for what he sings he'll never sing with emotion... has happen to me once or twice

Get him to write lyrics that he is passionate about.

i say b!tch slap him repeatedly... but thats just me. remember, even emotionless is an emotion.

Is he into what your playing? If not, that could be one reason.
Has he been singing in front of crowds long? If not he could be nervous (especially if theres a chick he likes in the crowd) Or he could be focusing to much on the technical part of singing instead of feeling the music.
He will never be great, no matter his technical ability, unless he can feel it.

I should've been more specific.

It's not really emotion he lacks, it's presence. He does well on his highs and mids, but it turns into blech when he does lows.

Well then just get him some lessons.

Yeah, what he said. Have him do the normal vocal stuff before a show (Honey tea, throat exercises for an hour before hand, etc).

Seconding the recommendation for lessons. It sounds like something isn't lining up right. Either that or he's trying to sing lower than his voice is designed to go. Can't really tell without hearing him. Have you directed him to the singing thread?
