Alright im not exactly sure what all this takes. I have no idea actually, but I was just curious of how to make one. Its gotta be more complicated then a box, with a 250k pot in there to control the volume right?

I looked through some of the sites listed and didnt see anything for an attenuator, or volume control, or something, but any help would be appreciated

I did find
http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/newland/2081/id3.htm

which is basically a plastic box with input output jacks, and a 100k audio tapered pot
soo is this all there is to it?

Attenuators are a bit more than a volume control in a box, cos they've got to give the right impedance to your amp. Exactly how that's done I'm not sure, though.

And those Hot Rod "volume boxes" are LIES!

It's supposed to go in the effects loop, so turning it down acts like a master volume. Real attenuators help you drive the power tubes by attenuating after the output of the amp.

and the volume box works on non-master volume amps, so it would be an ordinary master volume. like the hot rod's clean channel. it'd drive the preamp, but not the poweramp.

I was thinking that you could lower the volume level from the guitar, and crank the amps master volume to saturate the tubes...

But i guess it did seem way to simple, haha
Anyone know of any schematics for one? this seems a little to complex for me to build myself now
:P

it won't saturate if you don't load it with anything.

Ahh I see...

I was reading up on some stuff... And would it be possible to use a pot to control the output of the speakers?

Like place a pot between the amp and the speakers, cut the wire before it wire before it reaches the speaker, and do whats listed above? or would that just not work?

i have a weber minimass 25w, and it's great. i don't use it all the time because i don't want my powertubes to blow up yet, but yea. it's great when i can play it at gig volume.

The easiest way I can think of doing it is using a resistive load to place the right impedance on the amps output, then using a totally clean SS poweramp. That way, you can control the output volume by changing the volume on the SS poweramp, which doesn't depend on being pushed to sound it's best.
