Hey I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for songs that have sort of a dark calm feel to them. Sort of like Mad World (Gary Jules version), La Petite Fille De La Mer (Vangelis), Claire De Lune (Debussy), This Lullaby (Queens of the Stone Age), Street Spirit (Radiohead). Actually I would prefer something not finger picked, or at least not too complex of picking because in general I focus on using a pick and strumming. So yeah full out chord strumming songs are cool too. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah but it's hard to think of one that's that specific.

Try Muse's Ruled By Secrecy.

Also, Garbage's You Look So Fine.

any of Opeth's acoustic stuff...Still day beneath the sun, to bid you farewell, Patterns in the ivy (very simple but if you can get someone to play the piano parts along with you it's beautiful), Patterns in the ivy II, hope leaves, in my time of need, etc.

well if you want more QOTSA Mosquito Song is kind of calm dark sounding... that is until the horns kick in then it sounds like... what ive described to people as a pirate funeral... and on their new album Running Joke... and i think River in the Road are kind of like that. i might be thinking of the wrong ones though.

glasgow megasnake has that weird calm essence about it.
I can't stand watching people waste their money on horrible gear.

A Perfect Circle's (quite frankly, better) cover of Imagine.

and to a lesser extent, Be Quiet and Drive, or Minerva by Deftones.

You take that back, right now!

If you like "Clair De Lune", I would certainly look into more works by Claude Debussy. Much of his composing takes on a similar character. His most notable:

Solo:
Reverie
Arabesque No. 1
Valse Romantique

Orchestral:
Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (Perhaps his most famous orchestral work)

Yes, it does! I also love Hunted by a freak and Emergency Trap. Not to mention everything else they've done

ALso, I second your mention of Shadows Fall's cover of Welcome to the Machine. It sounds great (original would work as well though ).

Lou Reed - Perfect Day. It might be on piano but there's a demo done just with an acoustic - sounds even better that way.

"The Dreams That Don't Come True" by Zao

"The Leaving Song (part I not II)" by AFI

and Black Light Burns has some pretty decent darkly ambient stuff too.

Opeth's whole Damnation album is like that, and if your really into the country-dark-ambient thing, then Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska is always a bleak jounrey. And i totally agree with whoever said that APC's cover of Imagine is better than John Lennon's. I mean the man was a genius, but the original is more like a campfire song, APC do it like it was meant to be done i think. And vermillion is a good song, it's just that Slipknot is a ****ty band.
