Gibson Dirty Fingers
Duncan Invader
EMGs (take ur pick of actives)

Either EMGS (duh)

Or Gibson dirty fingers or the 498T Smokey Coils (the pups in the SG menace) should work wonderfuly

from what i've heard changing pickups and using a modeling amp won't really give you a noticeably different sound.

Seriously, there's no point worrying about pickups...first off the guitar isn't all that fantastic, but more to the point pickups won't make any difference on your amp, or even the Spider. Which is pants, by the way.

Just put all your money towards getting the best amp you can afford.

I do not think so, I think the name Smokey Coil just refers to the look of it, because the rest of the name is w/ brass studs. And when I first looked at the guitar I don't remember the Smokey Coil part.

Threadstarter, how much money do you have to spend (include the money your using for the amp)

Because I own a LP-100 (I broke the neck) and there could be other ways to fix your need for metal, because I use actives on my Spider-II but it would obviously sound better on a tube amp.

That's true to an extent.

Pickups do make a difference in your sound. If they didn't, why would people use different ones?

I use a DiMarzio X2N in my bridge and it crushes.

They make dick-all difference through a 15 watt solid state amp, likewise a modeller. Pickups rely on the rest of your equipment, if it's not up to scratch then pickups won't do what they're supposed to.

Instead of buying a Spider III (please dont, everyone here will be able to tell you about how horrible they are. Theyre sterile no-tone monsters. They only sell them because of the 'inbuilt effects' which are cheap and horrible. >_< save the money from your pickups, save the amp money, and keep saving into a much better amp. Someone here will give you a good suggestion (you might just upgrade to a higher cube? i know the 30/60 are much better than the 15)

As in, on a 15W modeling amp. I've been playing for 6 months and I know pickups don't make a difference until you play from either a tube or a good SS amp (randalls and such)

Thank you, if your smart and know how to control the adjustments on it, the thing can sing.

And pickups do make a difference, through my 15w modeler the difference between my old LP-100 pickups and the actives on my Schecter is huge! It sounds better on all channels.

I have a feeling that the people who say they hate Spiders haven't played them, or have barely played them

Not from my experience.

However, not everyone's ears are the same. Just as people can envision things differently from others, people can also hear things differently from one-another. There's no 'knowing' whether or not a difference is made. I can hear differences.

But I'm not here to start an argument or anything.

Keep playing, dudes.

Then why do you want to waste your limited money on a pickup that isn't going to help your sound. The Spider is a nasty sounding, unresponsive amp - it's one step up from a Fisher Price toy. If you want to get the best from your limited funds, and i'm sure you do, then get yourself a cube 30 or 60.

I could swear that we could make a program that could take the place of you mark but seriously, save for a decent amp.

I disagree with all you people saying that pickups won't change anything for a small amp such as a Roland Cube, I have one and theres a difference between the EMGs in my Hellraiser and the stock Jackson pickups in my Jackson.

But in your defense, that difference isn't that big so spending money on pickups shouldn't be your first priority.

pickups are just microphones, so with ****ty gear they will just magnify how much it sucks.
