what constitutes "core" being added at the end of a genre? Like metalcore or grindcore, you know. Any info?

yeah it's gotta be a sub genre of hardcore

metalcore- hardcore with metal influences
mathcore- hardcore with fast complicated riffs
deathcore- "very" brutal all screaming hardcore

etc.

the question is...

why does hardcore have a 'core' on the end?

hard=tough/more extreme

core= essential things/basics

hardcore= the basics taken to a more extreme level

at least that's what I would assume it to be

afaik hardcore is a shortening of hardcore punk. so it's basically a more extreme version of punk. but I can't honestly claim to be an expert

Because "Hard" as a genre really doesn't have a "ring" to it, ya know?

"What kind of music do you listen to?"
"Hard."

he said hard haha

^

well, hardcore is annoyingly basic

lowest note on the guitar x20 in less than original rhythm
you now have a theme

metalcore just seems to be what the old skool metal fans call the new metal bands because they don't want to except that their genre didn't die in the *enter decade*

Yes it does.

Instead of me telling people, "I'm hardcore."

I'd just say, "I'm hard."

Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.

hardcore influences
I really wish people would stop tacking cores to everything though. It's really annoying. It's like the new "emo". Not in the style but in the fact that everyone says this is ______core just like how everyone said something that sucked was emo.

I'm sure you do.

This kinda came to my mind.

Hardcore is usually stuff with double bass and screaming with a touch of emo in it, right?

And the sound can be described as "hard".
So maybe what the groups in the genre are going for is music with a overall hard sound.

Hardcore is like screaming drop tuning palm muted and then they play a harmonic and trem it and then they do that again

hardcore encompasses a lot more than just "stuff with double bass and screaming with a touch of emo in it". go listen to some Black Flag, Refused or go take a walk in the hardcore forum.

Oh dude, I know. I really like hardcore stuff.

I'm just kinda floating stuff out there, because that's the general tone of the genre in today's music.

Trying to dissect it to understand the core, and hard part.

ok so let's make you "Guy A" in this situation...
Guy B: "So what genres of music do you associate yourself with?"
Guy A: "I'm Hard."

what are the chances that "Guy A" doesn't get punched in this situation?
i don't know about you but I would say slim to none

no, hardcore is a faster more aggressive form of punk. bands like minor threat and los crudos are hardcore.

you're describing bad metal that stupid people think is hardcore these days.

ohh sorry. it just seems like there is a lot of ignorance surrounding this genre (the extremists going as far as classifying it as death metal ).

Hardcore is a term that people use to describe something as very intense. The term was originally applied to music in the form of, "hardcore punk."

True hardcore should not be associated with metalcore and deathcore. It gives a bad name to bands like Bad Brains and MDC.

Word. I know what you mean.

Alot of genre bashing going on.

It's called OPINIONS.

But still, whatev.

1. Hardcore

A branch of underground/indie music influenced by faster abrasive punk rock. Originating in the early 80’s as a variant of punk rock, hardcore evolved to a modern sound that can be compared to non commercial metal. The constant themes range from Straight Edge, to Politics, to Positive and Negative.

Bands range from Minor Threat from the 80’s to One Fifth, or Unearth of today.

Bad Brains is hardcore.(UrbanDictionary)

That urban dictionary reference sucks because it lists metalcore as modern hardcore, when modern hardcore is still just regular hardcore. Metalcor = hardcore + metal people, goddamn.
