you could have, but you would have needed to enable it in your old itunes library. You might be able to copy the tracks over if you enabled it for use as an external hard drive, but i wouldnt count on it

Go to your ipod on my computer. Show the hidden files, and there should be a music file in the ipod control. Copy that to your computer. And then import that entire file to your itunes.

You bought the music off of iTunes, did you not?

When I took my shuffle to a different computer, I was able to redownload songs that I had purchased (the ones that were on the shuffle at least, and they were the ones I had downloaded from iTunes.) If they weren't purchased, use the other directions.
