I'm thinking about getting one. I'd have like 600$. Should I save up, or are 600$ laptops good, cuz 600$ desktops generally are not the best.

600 is not enough for a laptop.

if you think a 600 desktop isn't good enough, well you're looking at like a $2000 laptop to match a $600 desktop.

Depends on what you want to do with it... I've got a $600 laptop, acer travel mate, for internet and typing up papers, I've still got my desktop though for more intensive applications like running Virtual Machines for my computer classes so I can have three computers running to do homework all on different OSs at the same time. It is not the best laptop but it does everything I need it to do, I have some music and videos on it too but not much, the battery is not awesome, but I rarely use it without a power source around anyways so its not a big deal. If I drop like $150 I can get a battery with like four hours of battery life, current is about two.

laptops are much higher in price
get a desktop....600 is good enough for a fair setup.
it wont be a top notch gaming machine but it wont break down every day...

Im running an acer aspire T180 deskop with vista and upgraded to 2gb ram....i recommend one. I am very happy with mine.

keep an eye out on slickdeals.net for rebates on desktops...i got my aspire for just $200

I also have an acer aspire 5570Z laptop...lasts 2 hours on one charge so i say get another battery with it...
its great for internet and text stuff but i dont think its much of a game computer
the stats

Dual core 1.73ghz Intel processor
1GB ram
vista home pre.
light weight
useful dual layer supported DVD reader/burner
fair battery life

just do a reformat with it though or it will run slow
got this one for free....sent out 50 rebates for it though..,
