How do people do it? I mean, I can figure out little scale-riffs and little solos and sh*t without too much trouble. But when it comes to things like chords/power chords, I'm clueless. I have no idea where to start.

IE: the song "Coma" by GNR. If it wasn't for the tab on the website, I'd have absolutely no clue how to play the song. And the same goes for almost every GNR song of all time.

So, how the heck do people go out and figure those things out?

You figure out the root note of the chord first. So hum the first note of "Coma" (or root note of the chord. I don't know the song). Then find that note on your guitar and then either play a regular Root-5th-Octave power chord, or a variation if you hear the variation. The more you do it, the better you get.
