I do believe you just used Blink 182 and hard rock in the same sentence. It would seem you're rather confused.
I have a quote in my signature! And it makes fun of blink-182! I'm cool now!

Go for the cheaper ones..I've heard those small units are a little noisy but can be hushed a little with better quality tubes....but then you are making it an expensive preamp and so you may want to just go with the higher priced unit.

Pre-amps for under $300 are all just bout the same IMO and I know thrice_removed will chime in with some more info on preamps

look over this: (post 13 and higher)

and talk about the ART preamp tube swap:

I Have the $30 and I am very happy with it, there isn't much noise unless you really crank it, which you probably shouldn't do anyway.

Generally all outboard pres under the FMR RNP sound very similar. In fact I doubt you could tell the difference between almost any of them in a blind shootout. So even though you most likely won't be able to hear the difference (heck I probably couldn't either), I will tell you that the M-audio DMP3 and ART Tube MP are considered two of the best. With those I can hear a difference to some degree. I am not sure it is "better" than anything else in the price range necessarily, yet it does sound "different" - pretty much an unavoidable quality at the price range.
PM Me for any help you need with recording systems/tips
