Well we all know that metal has possibly the most sub genres out of all normal genres. Recently my friend and I nerded things up by having a contest on how many subgenres of metal we had on our ipods. I had 23, he had 31.

How many do you guys have, and what's the oddest? Mine was latin Metal, his was Finnish Humper Metal.

I just call all of it metal. I used to not even label genres. I still mostly don't, with the exception of classical/jazz/soundtrack/hip hop/electronica.

Bah. There's not that many genres... Let's see what I've got...

Heavy/classic metal - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest...
Thrash metal - Megadeth, Metallica...
Black metal - Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Immortal...
Death metal - Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel...
Melodic death metal - Wintersun, Dark Tranquility
Power metal - Symphony X
Progressive metal - Opeth, Dream Theater, Meshuggah

7 genres. And, not counting metalcore (which I refuse to call metal), that's all the metal genres I can think of. EDIT: Ah, doom metal, I guess. Eight, then.
I'm a communist. Really.

what is with the sub-genres in metal anyway??????? rom what ive noticed most of these sub genres are the same old thing trying to get recognition from being original when ther are not (almost every local metal band here claims to be of a different genre but they all use the same sytyles same chord progression and usually same style lyrics as well). kind of annoying in my books.

now on the other side of the coin i can apreciate when a sub genre actually deserves to exist due to a truly different styling addition of an unusual instrument ect.....but its rare
just so i dont have to edit every post i make, let me clarify something I CANT TYPE WELL....thanks

What's the point of using such a specific genre label if only one or two bands fit that label?

I use genres solely for searching for music in my library to listen to, so I can't really understand why I'd make a new genre just for one band.

Ignoring the "Are they even metal?" side of that argument there are very few bands that have a similiar sound to them. Certainly not enough to warrant it's own genre.

It's going to seem that way when you aren't familiar with the music and the different characteristics of each style, but believe me there is enough difference to warrant different categorizations.

It's not a ****ing contest. lol lets make up genres for every band. "Finnish Humper Metal?" I think you mean "metal influenced by the Finnish humpaa, such as Finntroll or Korpiklaani, which are lumped under folk metal". Latin metal? wtf. I have Wyoming metal, it was made in Wyoming, which necessitates a new subgenre.

Hm, often yes. The biggest flaw in the system is that every bastard's definition of the genres varies. Any band discussion will often be overshadowed by that arguing which genre the band is part of.

Take Iced Earth for example. Some say power, some say thrash; it's all down to your definition really.
Another example is Megadeth. Some people claim die hard they are a thrash band, but I would never recognise them as it.

Doom

Industrial

Speed
Thrash
Nu
Death
