who doesn't seem to care for pedals or effects? Am I the most boring guitarist in the world? I play blues and classic rock mainly...I'm very Stones influenced. For that matter do I even need effects? Over the years I've spent numerous dollars on pedals that collect dust. I don't want to sell them. I seem to get good tone out of my amp and guitar( LP standard thru Mesa amp). Anyone else out there play effects free?
#2
I don't use effects anymore. I used to when I first started, but now it's just guitar, cable, amp.

It also helps if you have good equipment.

I want pedals, but I seem to get good tone without it. You just have a REALLY good setup without pedals.... and seeing as you dont need any over the top distortion or whammy for the stuff you play, there is no reall need for them.

its cool to play effects free because then you focus more on making your tone better instead of relying on digital stuff to change it for you. i personally play with them but i keep to the "wah" and any other sound you cant get out of an amp and guitar. so in short: if its what fits you then its probably what your best at. stick to it
#5
For the most part I do. Sometimes more is less. After rearanging my pedals many times I found the distortion on my amp sounded way better than any pedal. I still use a flanger here and there and a chorus. Ive been meaning to work on my wah. I think I will get a booster and compressor. But that will be about it I think. Most of the time I just plug into the amp and play. I have 2 multi things that sit and colect dust they do alot but not a good job of anything.
#6
I use a phaser or flanger occasionally, my wah most often, but I am totally comfortable sans pedals. I learned long ago that there are a whole lot of effects that can be gotten from controlled feedback, pickup switching and vol/tone on the guitar. In most cases a tasteful and minimal use of effects pedals can add much to the music, but overuse detracts. Many players just don't know the old adage "Less is better."
#7
I don't have any effects or pedals. Partly because I can't afford them, and partly because I have no use for them.
#8
I thought it was just me..I've been to jams where guys have brought a suitcase full of pedals and their tone still sounds like sh**. I'm not knocking guys who do use effects, because there are some cool ones out there, but I guess, its not me. As for a previous post about equipment. I agree, if I had a cheap Walmart guitar thru a pawn shop, beaten up old peavey 158, I'd likely use effects
#9
i wanna keep my tone moderately simple. i don't find anything wrong with fiddling with chorus or delay every once in a while, considering i don't own any. OD and wah pedal all i need for now, but a deluxe memory man would complete me.

all i use is a delay sometimes and thats it. i play through a valveking with a schecter and a gibson sg. its an orgasm in itself. the delay doesnt fudge with the distortion or tone so it is what u want it to be. just play whatever sounds good to you, no matter what. thats all music really is. insane setup by the way....someones got major cash to throw around.....

Setup is nice...I worked hard for it though.

Here's another problem I have. Is it me or do od pedals rob warmth from tone? I have a Boss BD 2, Blues Driver and it sounds like sh** no matter what tweaking I do with it

Every couple of years or so I end up selling all my gear except for one amp and one guitar because I decide that I want the pure tone of just the guitar into the amp. Some months later I end up deciding that it would be fun to experiment with something different and proceed to build a rig that shares nothing in common with my previous efforts.

As I said in a land far, far away , my preferences are exactly like those of this man. An OD, a wah, and a DMM would be all I'd ever need. Currently, I have Guitar --> Cable --> Amp. That's because I'm saving for a Prestige, though (stuck between 1570/2550/2570 :x). Gonna wait for the Christmas sales to bring that baby in I just missed a sale where I could have saved $75 instantly, but I was broke. Bleh. WAY off topic now. Grated cheese makes me happy.

The only effects i use are to strengthen my tone, not change it. I used a DD-3 sometimes to add a little bit of an echo effect for cleans and plan on getting a (probably) OCD and EQ to tighten up the sound of the amp itself. I always use my ISP Decimator, because without it my ears would die from feedback, and I also have a Dime Wah, but I almost never use it cause I can't really find a use for it, but I'm afraid to sell it cause it seems everytime I sell something, I finally find a use for it, but then I don't have it!!!

pedals are for n00bs!

not really but I don't like most of them. I'm still searching for the perfect fuzz though, then I'll have a massive 1 pedal chain

just like everything else about music, its subjective.
i myself have too much **** at my disposal. but i like it that way. however, i do think that you should learn on a very bare bones setup.
spent years playing a single pickup guitar through an amp with no distortion channel, and im a better player for it.

I mainly use effects to add a certain flavor to a part of a song. What gets on my nerves are people who base all their playing on effects. Like "the Edge" from U2. He's incredibly awful.

i dont know what the **** your thinking. the edge has one of the best delays on the planet and it highly sought after by hundreds of guitarists.

i rarely ever use any fx... i wouldn't mind a nice delay pedal for solos, but to be honest, other than that... maybe a nice analogue chorus and a wah. And if I didn't have a high-enough gain amp, a booster wouldn't hurt. But i'm not much an fx guy...

I have a busload of FX that I love to play with at home. Once I leave the house, though, I just plug in a wah, OD, and chorus, and hardly use them all that much. I like having reverb and tremolo available on the amp, too.

then I just became so attached to guitar->-Amp I didnt wanna change!

Now and again a wah and chorus! but thats it!

The Edge is such a ponce. Oh, great, so you can hit a couple of chords and with your EHX Chartbuster pedal it makes all middle aged women buy your record. Whoop de doo.

Not forgetting the 20 Digital Delays, digital amp, digital guitar and digital hat.

Oh, and the digital mini of Bono on his bedside table.

I don't really have any effects either, except for reverb built in to my amp that I use. The overdrive from my amp is pretty good, but I've been thinking about getting a clean boost or a good overdrive to add to it, but I'd have to find one I really liked first. I think a good wah would be fun too, but I can't see myself using it that much.
