What albums do you think are the definitive "Lights out" albums, ie. the albums you can turn off everything except iPod/MP3/CD Player, lie down and listen to (optionally sleep to too)

I nominate:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
John Frusciante - Shadows Collide With People
I'm so unique I don't even have a sig.

Radiohead - In rainbows

DSotM is the obvious choice, but let's look a little deeper, shall we?

Crime of the Century -- Supertramp (Awesome images created by the sound)

Breakin' Away -- Al Jarreau (Excellent for gettin' snuggly with your honey)

Night Lines -- Dave Grusin (Few of the Pit Monkeys have even heard of him)

I find it too song-based to really be considered a "trip" album.

Yea, I didn't think about it that way. I'm fonder of the song aspect of The Mars Volta than I am the experimental

But goddamn is De-Loused a good album, I re-listened to it the other day.

I second the guy who said "Black One" by Sunn O))) and nominate Darkspace I and II by, well, Darkspace.

Third Eye Blind- Blue-
The way the album starts off strong and energetic and then fades into progressively bleaker and more atmospheric songs is perfect. I'd say tracks 9 to 14 have an excellent mood to them for lying in the dark.

Beck- Sea Change-
If you can't fall asleep to this album, you should seek professional help. It's less like a 12/13 song album (depending upon the release area) and more like one hour long piece of music. Everything flows together beautifully, the guitar is subtle and well-delivered and the strings really make the album. Very relaxing, very calming.

Beck- Mutations-
My other favorite Beck release, it's slower in tone than his other work, but still very well done. It has a strong folk and Latin influence, and towards the end, begins to get increasingly more electric.

Radiohead- Amnesiac-
For that matter, OK Computer, Kid A, Hail to the Thief, or In Rainbows have a similar effect, I just prefer Amnesiac. Bleak, orchestrated, and carried with an anxious tone.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Californication/By the Way/Stadium Arcadium-
I have a playlist of songs from these three albums by the RHCP. Scar Tissue, Otherside, Tear, Venice Queen, Snow, Slow Cheetah, Wet Sand, Hard to Concentrate, Death of a Martian, etc, etc.
