As long as you know exactly,and i emphasise the exactly,what youre doing,give it a go,but unless youre 110% on the re-wiring etc,dont run the risk of ruining a strat.

i put in a new pickup in my guitar....it sounded weird for about 4 months...then i threw it and it sounds pretty badass

Of course you can. You have a large variety of pickups, so look into them.
