I was listening to Pantera the other day, and I remembered that Dimebag Darrell played in a music video with David Allen Coe (country singer). So I was thinking maybe pantera is considered Southern Metal. And maybe some other bands are probably in the same genre, so I want to know if anybody thinks theres such thing as southern metal, and if so then whats the difference between southern metal and other metal genres.

Dime was in Rebel meets Rebel with D.A.C

they called it a metal/country crossover

southern metal has more of a groove sound to it. Most bands i have heard that label themselves as southern metal are more metalcore than anything

Yeah, I'd check out all the Pantera "spin off"-bands:

Down
Superjoint Ritual
Rebel Meets Rebel
Damageplan
Hellyeah

They all have that certain Southern groove that made Pantera so special (even though I'm not a huge fan of Superjoint, but hey, each to their own).

Everything but Down is utter nu-metal trash.

Bullshi.

Hellyeah's got members from a former nu metal band, but that it is. If you don't like it, fine, but keep all that crap to yourself.

Dropped B: Check
Lack of solos: Check
Nu-metal vocals: Check
Excessive double-bass: Check

They're the nu-metalest band that's come out in recent years.

That's as maybe.

But calling DamagePlan Nu-metal? What is wrong with you?

Wrong, wrong and wrong.

Vinnie is FAR too good to sound like those bands for a start.

He's not that great. Like every member of Pantera, he's been put up on this pedestal of greatness. He's an asshole and an above average drummer.

Now stop trying to derail the thread.

They don't remind me of Pantera at all. Just to clear up genre confusion, they're southern hardcore.

As for southern metal, there's Brand New Sin.
