i've come to notice that with my alternate picking, when i get it to any kind of fast speed, i can hear a lot of extra noise with every pick. i figure it's something with my attack, but basically when i shred, in between the notes is a kind of "chunk" noise.. it's really annoying. anyone know of what i could potentially be doing wrong? or just more practice? also, i use a really hard pick.. does this mean i have to change to something softer?

You might be hitting the string below the string you're picking if you're getting noise between notes. Try to either swing the pick upwards away from the guitar or make each pick motion smaller.

If I understand what you mean, I've noticed the same thing when I have the gain turned up really high.
