so i got a new computer for AUS$700 and its supposed to have:

256 Mb O/B 3Dvideo card
and
1 gig DDR2 RAM

well i got it at home now and im checking it out and it says that theres 896 MB of RAM. Then i find out thats there something called an Sis Mirage 3 graphics card with only 128Mb memory.

SOoooo...

i was just wondering if 896 MB is the same as 1 Gig?????
and whats the deal with the graphics card, is it even a good one???

Do i need to go back to the store....... and.......... open ........UP ...A ..................CAN.............OF................. "Excuse me sir i was just wondering if these were the correct parts for my computer, thanks"

much appericiation to those who help.

Maybe your video card uses the computers memory?

1024 Mb - 128 Mb = 896 Mb

I couldn't see your physical memory being used soley for graphics purposes. Sure, you can delegate that in the BIOS, but if it says it has it as a key feature, then your computer should have that graphics card itself, and that amount of memory. I'd take it back.

1024 KB = 1 MB

1024 MB = 1 GB

1024 GB = 1 Terabyte

And so on.

And yeah, my iPod says 2 GB, but it's 1.74. Friggin' Apple...

That is pretty much EXACTLY what happened to me. I got a one gig computer, ends up I've only got 700MB or so available. So I get another card of 250MB and so in total I should now have 1.25GB yet I still only have around 700 - 800MB available.

The guy at the shop kept saying crap about how memory is a weird thing, there can be good or bad memory. I just wanted to give him a taste of the back of my hand.

It's a shared memory graphics card which is using 128 Mb of your PCs memory. The SIS 3D is integrated so your PC does not have a dedicated GFX card, this is fine for Office etc but will suck for playing games... It can probably be configured to use 256Mb of memory, but that's taking memory away from your PC which is a bit of a trade off.

That's bull, memory is memory. Say you have 512mb stock. You put in 2 sticks of 256mb. You have 1024 mb. Ya got yourself a gig. There's no well this stuff is cheap 256, so really it's only 217. It doesn't work like that.

...a 100 gig hdd only has about 91 gigs of actual memory...

You don't store with your memory, you run applications and programs with your memory. Granted, the higher quality memory you get, ie DDR3, the higher it clocks out at. It's still the same amount of memory.
