Hey,

I am starting to write music. I plan to record soon with my acoustic guitar and vocals. I was wondering which method is best for me to record. I've heard that digital workstations are good as well as recording onto the computer.
Thnx.

get a computer with a nice firewire/usb interface. presonus firepods or omega lexicons are good. also look at alexis firewire mixers. nearly all come with free software

I dont want to spend too much, considering the SHURE (58) mic will set me back a hundred.

well it depends. The higher end workstations will allow you to connect a mouse and monitor so you can edit a lot easier but the low end models only allow USB transfer of the finished product.

If you go for a workstation get a nice unit...something around 8 inputs
If you dont have the money for something like that...you can get a firewire interface like the Mackie Onyx Satellite which is limited to two inputs but runs lower in price compared to the workstations.

if you need to mic drums or something and need around 8 inupts you can also go with a PreSonus FIREPOD

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-Firepod-FireWire-Interface-with-Cubase-LE?sku=184131

it includes firewire connection and Cubase for the recording software.

Don't even consider a workstation for what you want to do. Low end workstations are completely obsolete as far as I am concerned, and you can't afford a high end one.
I assume you have a PC that is not older than dirt. If it is, replace it with something 4 years old or newer.

Get a good quality mic/pre-amp. SM58 is fine. Mixers/toneports/whatever-opinions vary a lot. If you don't l ike it, hell just return it and buy something else. $300 should get you what you need (not counting the PC). Try to get something with a digital interface to your PC. Firewire is the best, but for your purpose, is not really needed. USB or SPDIF (if your PC supports that).

Where, and by who? Just a note - most of the reviews on places like Musiciansfriend are utterly useless and should only be weighted as a last resort.
