Random question, but I've heard it said two ways.

1. Epi-phone [epi like the pen, and phone like ring ring)
2. Epiphony [like epiphany but with an ony instead)

just wondering what y'all thought, I personally say the first.

The name "Epiphone" is a combination of proprietor Epaminondas Stathopoulos' nickname "Epi" and "phone", Greek for "sound".

because the founder was called Epi something or other... can't remember what his surname was but i think it starts with a G

edit: ^yeah. ok, it started with an S.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

it actually isn't named after anyone, its a subsidiary of Gibson. Epiphone is just Greek for 'towrard or against the sound' epi + phone

Its a subsidiary of gibson, but only because they bought the company. It gets its name from the founders son "Epimanondas" whos nick name was Epi, and the phone part made sense seeing as they made sound

Check the history section of their site for a better explaination

epiphone competed against gibson until they were bought out by them.

completely separate company to begin with and so had a different founder.

nope, it was named after a person, I believe a father and son started the bisnuss together, and the sons nick name was Epi, and they started nameing some models epiphone....then Gibson bought them out, dont remember the whole story...look it up.

edit:forgot to say something about the topic...I say it the 1st way.

It pales in comparison to the words "FIRST ACT" on a headstock.
