this is gonna sound REALLY stupid, but....

what is the answer to this...

4-8+3

do you just go left to right and do 4-8=-4 then add 3 (my phone says yes)

or, according to BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) do you add 8 and 3 as if they were brackets, then subtract from 4?

wow, maybe i shouldnt be taking a-level lol.

Your acronym is correct but I'll modify it do help: BO(DM)(AS). The division/multiplication and addition/subtraction are the same "level" and are evaluated from left to right. Think of them as piece in the hierarchy and they are always evaluated from left to right.

In this problem you go left to right. Another acronym used in the US is PEMDAS, please excuse my dear aunt sally. It stands for: Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.

In this problem you can just work left to right and it doesn't matter, so as you said,

4-8+3; 4-8= -4

so we can then do -4+3=-1

That doesn't make sense mathematically unless you first demonstrate that the set of integers and the operation of addition form an abelian group.

Even still, you just look at the 8 numeral as -8. Thus, -8 + 3 = -5. 4 + -5 = -1
