Is there an easy way to mute the lower strings while playing a tapping part, eg: the intro to Iron Maiden's Pashendale?

Why did I say I was picking? I'm an idiot. I meant to say just muting the strings while I tap.

When you tap, rest your (tapping) palm over the other strings to prevent them ringing out.

Yea, but when I do that when playing a Vai song, I get a scratching noise from the lower strings because my picking hand has to move to tap on different frets and the palm of the picking hand brushes with the lower strings.

I didn't think they had metal in the 1790's

Ah, touche.

Good idea, but it wouldn't work because the song goes quickly into a power chord riff after the tapping intro.
