I was reading a book I got from the library on Philosophy, along with comparing the ideas of many philosophers and their notable students. It talked about intellect in comparison with sexual attraction, love and things long that nature for a brief section of a page. It then said (I don't think this quote is word for word, but it is close enough): "Playboy isn't art, nor is it even artistic...It stimulates men and render their intellect useless".

Do you agree or disagree?

theres a fine line between art and porn. Playboy isnt art, as its made for another reason. but if some1 paints something that has to do with nudity, and isnt ment for the same purpose playboy is, id consider it art.

Disagree. Was man designed to live as a virgin his entire life?

that doesnt even have anything to do with the question!

i agree because art should not cause you to recieve the same emotion from several pieces where playboy reneders the same or similar emotions with all if its pieces.

That's not at all what the quote is saying.

Playboy is hardly art, but I seriously doubt a bit of porn is going to "render the intelect useless"...

Disagree.

Not every man looks at a playboy and thinks OH BOY TITS.

Some of them really do look at these magazines simply for the beauty in these women.

Personally, I don't. But some do.

Great list Rutch. On re-reading this one I'd have to say Solid State means not liquid or gas.

I figured it out.

Meh, I wouldn't call it art, but at the same time, I wouldn't call making a cake art, but both can be done artistically.

Besides, lust is an emotion just as easily provoked by art as any other feeling is.

Art and Playboy serve different purposes. I don't think you will see art critics getting aroused and bashing the bishop over a painting.
It's gonna be a blue day

Oh no, everyone who has ever seen some form pornography for "self-gratification" is retarded.

Yeah, then every ****ing man on earth is retarded........ I'd have to disagree...

Isn't the purpose of art to stimulate?

By the way, what are we agreeing/disagreeing with? The fact that Playboy is or isn't art, or the fact that porn renders our intellect useless?

I agree with this guy.

It all depends on how you view it. If you're viewing it for spank material, then no, it's not art. If you're viewing it for the way the photographer takes the pictures then yes. Play boy is the only one that could be considered art. The rest are smut.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I kind of agree, but..art is in the eye of the beholder. Mind you, guys will not look at a playboy and say ''hey, that is art!'' but you never know.

I believe the human body itself is art. Although, maybe sticking whipping cream and cherries on it does "enhance" it for some fans, I believe that it detracts from the actual work itself.

Both I think. Separately.

and render their intellect useless".
Agree/Disagree Some men don't have enough blood to support both heads simultaneously. For us ... erm, I mean them, they become intellectually crippled when aroused. For a smaller group, arousal simply redirects the intellect and imagination.

Granted, Playboy is not high art. There is little left to the imagination and interpretation in the picture stories. But as a whole, it CAN be considered art.

... since art IS based on individual interpretation: I consider it art, therefore it is art to me.

I don't think it's art, but I also don't think it was intended to be.
Who dat?

Well, I disagree that it's not art.

Andy Warhol said it best. "Art is anything you can get away with."

I mean, sure, it's not used as an art, and isn't viewed as much at first glance, but it is professional photography, and they take the elements of art and principles of design into consideration.

So, yes, IMO, it's still art.

It's all in the eye of the beholder (no pun intended) as to what it is, though.

Just for the record, the book wasn't stating this as fact, but it was merely giving ideas from someone else. I can't remember who it was, but they didn't exactly say this. The author took their words and gave an example.

I don't consider playboy to be porn and it is more "artistic" than actual porn usually (though some porn can be highly artistic.

i would mostly agree. nudity can be artistic, but in the case of a magazine like playboy, it rarely is.

but really, i guess its just an opinion. what is and isnt art is just a bunch of opinions anyway.
