How do you know what key your in for certain songs?

If your a playing a Ab power chord are you in A minor key?

Ab is the 7th of the A major scale

but in the A minor scale, itd be out of key

Ab was just an example... can you explain how you figure is out if your playing the 4th(C#) fret of the A string... what key would you be in?

I'm not an expert but...

You can kinda hear it. Like the note you hear that keeps getting played. Or just the chords in the song. You can tell by the structure of the chords. And sometimes by the last note of the song. Not all the time.

You could be in almost any key. More than one note constitutes a key!

Let's say you played the notes C E G E F G B C. Condensed, that's C E F G B. Most likely, you are in the key of C major (C D E F G A B C), considering the last note is C (resolution to C) and all the notes you played are included in the key.

You can't tell what key you're in with just one note/chord.

With a little knowledge of scales and using , you should be able to figure it out.

EDIT: those sound like chromatic notes, not in any scale.
