Hey guys,

I have officially finished my first year of uni so its 5 months of holidays/working full time an electricity distribution company/drinking beer.

So I'm making a talk box - if you dont know what one is, listen to some Daft Punk or check this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By-cF0W2JLw - Its Stevie Wonder using one - they're cool ****. The start of generator by the Foo Fighter's using a talk box too.

They work by having a speaker which is in an air tight enclosure with a plastic tube coming from it, which then goes into your mouth. From this you can move your mouth and make all crazy types of noises which goes into your mic, I recon its awesome.

So atm I have 2 Alpine 6 inch speakers which I got off a mate, and a head full of ideas.

The problem is the speakers have to be powered, right? I need help or some ideas with what to do here. In some online tutorials on how to do this they use old computer speakers which have a power source in just take the speaker out of its casing - except i dont have the power source... Any ideas or help??

Heres a schematic of what I'm doing.

Pics will be up once I sort out the power source issue.

Its good to be back,
Tom.

I could just tell you this over MSN, but oh well I say you make a Ruby with a 12V supply and use that to power the speakers. If you want something a bit bigger, I know of schems for 10w amps that would perfectly suit what you want.

Good to see you back

ps. Beer sucks. $3 dacquiri's at the Casino FTW!

Richie Sambora (aka God) uses it a lot.

Don't you have to play on the guitar what your singing? I know Richie does...

I would love to have one, they're awesome!

this would be awesome, good luck sire!

i know both Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria uses a talk box, more notably Travis who uses it to contrast one of Claudios extended solo jamming sessions

A really nice talkbox part starts at about 3:45.

By the way, wouldn't you want your talk-box signal clean?

Well, according to Airheads, Lemmy is also god.

Maybe the musical world is like Ancient Greece...

I've always wanted a talkbox to an extent, but then I catch myself and think a bass talkbox may not work so well.

I usually go for the $7 ones.

I made one of the ghetto talkboxes and it worked kind of alright. Some random midrange speaker powered by a Kustom 10W amp. All the bells and whistles like electrical tape and blu-tac.

Since then I have bought a Selenium D210Ti to attempt something better. I'll most likely be ditching the 8" speaker out of this Kustom amp and replaceing it with the compression driver and using it like that. It'll be a little big but saves me some fabrication work for both an enclosure and a small amp. Plus I have distortion built right in to get some fuzzier tones.

Try making a "ghetto talkbox" first and working on technique. When I first tried out this new driver I thought "why bother doing this over the ghetto box?" but once I worked out a few different sounds the difference was obvious.

So how exactly is the compressor driver different? How did you enclose it?

The beauty of a CD is that the sound comes out of a single hole. No enclosure needed. Just find a way to taper down to your tube size and you're good to go.

I'll take some pictures when I'm not watching Indy tomorrow. Mines not finished but you'll get the idea.

No sound clips for you!

Thats sweet man that looks like an alright set up - love the tube stand haha. So how did you actually enclose the speaker?

No enclosure needed! I play it as you see it. You just need to get the tube onto the output (my dodgy method for the time being is blu-tac and tape) firmly.

Hey lads, I got some pics of what i have got so far

The Talk Box structure: (as dodgey as it looks i still think it will work well.

The top:

Im using a 12mm tube - this was basically a random guess what i thought would be comfortable in my mouth. If it doesnt turn out I have a screw top lid so I can change it easily

Here is the amp that I ordered - Its a 15 volt supply 6 watt amp. it cost a whole $8.45

and the speaker - 4 inch plastic cone. looks dodgey in the pic but i think it will be good

peace.
