All im wanting to do though is record vocals and guitar, would it work well with audacity, or does the software record aswell?

the only input it has is a 1/4" phone jack.
now you could get a phone type connection mic but they are not balanced so it will be a little noisy...

there are also some adapters out there that will allow you to use an XLR mic but it still wont be balanced.

If you must, go with the GX but I'm the type to plan ahead of anything and buy the next product up on the list.

ok... uve pursuaded me to get the ux1, what kind of cable would i need for the mic now?

since the UX1 does not have on board phantom power you have to either buy a Dynamic mic like a Shure SM57/58 or get a phantom power box and then you can run a condenser like the MXL990/991.

Condensers are great for vocals and acoustic guitar so I suggest getting something like that.

on the other hand, a nice Dynamic should work just find as well.
