Active = Takes batteries. EMG's are the most popular. Great for pinch harmonics, but lack in cleans and bass.

Passive = Create an electric current on their own when the strings vibrate. Better for cleans and bass.

Actives have a boosted signal from the batteries.

This boosted signal is often make it easy to get higher gain.

Some say that some actives lack responsiveness since they are boosted so much.

It's all preference .

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.

In your case, go passive. There's less stuff to replace (EMG require new pots) and Dimarzio should have good detailed wiring diagrams for an Ibanez-type guitar (they have a good business relationship).
