What would they be? I have a lot of time on my hands today, so I got to thinking.

Dynasty Warriors would probably be Dragonforce or Manowar, Silent Hill would probably be something like... My Dying Bride, or Monarch.

GTA would probably be rap...

Yeah, I'm bored.

It just occurred to me that UG attracts a lot of socially isolated male teenagers with questionable psychological dispositions.

Dragonforce is not a genre. Neither is Manowar. Neither is My dying bride or Monarch. These bands are not genres.

I think FPS games would be something like.... Malmsteen, or Batio. Racing games would probably be something like X-Japan. Resident Evil would probably be Deeds of Flesh, or Inhume. Maybe something lighter depending on the game.

The Suffering would be Cannibal Corpse.

I need a hobby.

RPGs could be post rock.

Not ALL RPGs, but a lot of them could.

The type of music that post rock is, and the way it encompasses soft meldoies, driving distortion, and other mixed styles, it would be perfect for RPGs.

Nah.
RPGs would be progressive rock/metal.

And depending on the RPG, they might also be Folk Metal.

Yea, you're probably right.

But, I think SOME post rock could work.

Like in some parts of Final Fantasy. Those Explosions in the Sky-esque clean sections fueling a bunch of cinematics, the driving distortion of Russian Circles in battles, and some action based cinematics, etc.

It could work, but not for everything.

But, since you said Progressive Metal, I remembered The Black Mages (how I forgot them, I don't know), and THEY are what should be the standard for rock/metal video game music.

I think Zelda would probably have good music... I could picture something like Folkearth, or Korpiklaani.

Interesting thread...let me try

Quirky Japanese games (Katarami Damacy): J-Pop/Rock

Retro games (they're basically genres now): Synth-rock/Dragonforce (speed metal wouldn't fit and they clearly are classic VG inspired)

First person shooter: Heavy metal. Not necessarily black or speed.

RPG: Epic/orchestral rock (Nightwish?), Classical

Shooters (the insanely hard arcade games like Raiden): Malmsteen/Vai/virtuoso rock.

Fighting games: Hard to say. I think hip-hop or traditional Asian music are closer matches than rock.

Strategy RTS games: Marching music or orchestral soundtrack.

Tycoon-style and turn-based games (Simcity, Civilization): Jazz or classical

MMORPG: Trance. People keep playing and playing, losing all sense of time, and it's boring if you're not involved.

Racing: Sim, then 80's rock (Panama worked really well as a song in Gran Turismo IV) and European techno (a game I play, GTR2 has loads of it).
Arcade, like Burnout, then energetic rock (Jimmy Eat World).
