its an overdrive, meant to drive your tubes harder

Its a overdrive, I use it to boost leads, its basically the boss version of a Ibanez TS808 tubescreamer but adds a touch more gain then the tubescreamer. The tone isn't that amazing though.

ssguitar's right.

however, a lot of people use "distortion" and "overdrive" interchangeably.

i really think overdrive pedals and distortion pedals both add solid state overdrive/distortion...

its just that distortion pedals have a thicker, harsher distortion than an overdrive, that has mild creamy tube-amp OD-like distortion.

both boost volume to an extent too.

what boosts the tubes in an amp is a clean booster. OD pedals are capable of doing this, but they color the tone. some people prefer the OD boosting, because they like the tone colored by the OD.

Overdrive pedals DO NOT "drive your tubes harder"

They're a solid state simulation of the sound of an overdriven tube amp. However if you use one with an already overdriven tube amp, usually with the gain on the pedal backed off, it augments the onboard distortion nicely. They tend to boost the mifrange and also tighten the sound up a bit which is good for solos.

The BD-2 is dirtier than most overdrive pedals hand has a bit more gain so arguably it's a bit more versatile as a stand-alone pedal, however it'll still work as a booster....albeit a slightly dirtier one.

isn't it also something like, dist pedals clip the signal harder, and od pedals clip it softer to simulate more 'tube-like' od? it's just something i have stuck in my head, dunno if it's completely true yet haha.
