what scales do bands like metallica and megadeth use a lot for riffing (not soloing)? i use minor pentatonic, minor pentatonic blues, and phrygian mode but i need to know some more

Kirk has some decently speedy ones, not like sweep picking to the max fast but you know, fast. Like listen to Dyers Eve or something, Kirk does some speedier stuff.

tornado of souls by megadeth seems to start out in a mix of dorian/blues scale, alot of metallica songs are minor, pentatonic, and blues. for riffs I like to use phrygian and locrian to sound a little dark, I sometimes use the spanish gypsy.

b2s and b5s make for a very dark sound. Use chromatics as approach notes.

i think riffs are mostly made up of off-the-head jamming sessions. i doubt that they put much theory into something like a verse riff or chorus riff.
