Well I know how to harmonize the G Major scale, but I just don't get why some chords sound minor when there aren't any flatted notes. For example the III chord is a B minor 7 (obviously the same if I use triad (i.e. b minor)). Why does it become minor? How about if I am doing a completely different scale and harmonizing that, when do I know it's minor? Thanks.

In every major scale:

I - major (maj7)
II - minor (min7)
III- minor (min7)
IV - major (maj7)
V - major (7)
VI - minor (min7)
VII - diminished (m7b5)

So in G Maj scale:

G Am Bm C D Em F#dim.

Why Bm?

G A B C D E F#

Why Am?

G A B C D E F#

See the pattern?

Yes I know about stacking the thirds, but why is it a minor chord. A minor chord consists of a 1-b3-5, so why would A min be just that when it doesn't have any flats?

Learn intervals...

C is to A a b3. The end.

You look it from the A major scale perspective:

A B C# D E F# G#

This makes a A Major chord.

A minor scale:

A B C D E F G

A C# E - 1 3 5 - A Major Chord
A C E - 1 b3 5 - A Minor Chord

When you diminish C# you get C!

Capisce???

The solution for all your problems

A minor chord is any chord with a flat third.

I think.

Fill me out on this, someone?

I already know intervals, I just didn't know if I was supposed to do it like that. Thanks for the help.
