PLato argued that we live like a group of prisoners, chained in a cave facing the wall. Behind them is a screen with a fire burning. People and objects are passing the screen creating shadows which entrance the prisoners.
Plato argues that we are the prisoners, gazing at the shadows which represent everyday life. He argues also that if we break away from these distractions we can be truly happy and find real wisdom.

Does that make sense? What do you think?
#6
Did he actually say that or are you making it up?

But I suppose it does make sense, in a way. I read another brilliant quote which meant something similar, but I could never find it afterwards. Pissed me right off
"It's funny how most people love the dead. Once you're dead, you're made for life" - Jimi Hendrix

Is it incest if I had sex with my brother in law's half sister? Because if it is, it was so ****ing worth it.

you didn't explain the story right

He's right, and most philosophers agree.

He should tell me how to not see these darn shadows, then I'll listen a bit more.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

-Matthew Arnold

Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing.

I don't see how you can conclude from that that we're living in an illusion.

If you're questioning our existence, I'll go all Réne Descartes on your arse..

It's a good allegory, but it was as much applicable to religion and the pervasive opinions of the "enlightened" ruling classes than a case for sensory deception?

My argument as a Christian is that if we are distracted by the pleasures of our fallen world(the shadows), we can never be happy in any real sense. If we seek a higher understanding, for me that being the promise of salvation in Jesus Christ and the word of God, then we will be happy in a true sense.

Where's the proof?

It's philosophy man, it's just people's interpretation of life. No proof just reasoning and concepts.

But surely if the Matrix didn't exist in our world...then we'd already be in the Matrix??

The Matrix= sensationallist rubbish.
Plato= cool!

Why can't they both be cool?

Or Sensationalist Rubbish?

The Matrix was a science fiction movie, while Plato is not.
But The Matrix took its plot from Plato's philosophy.
Also there is no way to find out if we are living in the biggest conspiracy of all time.

So while I am eating my tasteless steak. I will say this.
