I seen a thread about these to kids fighting over what makes a good Guitarist. I personally think practice, keeping a good rythm(not slowing down when not suppose too), playing chords and power chords, solos that fit the song, speed somewhat and more but Im too lazy to post more but what do you guys say!

I will tell you in a week what makes a good guitarist....

Simple answer to this question and none of you got it.

Musicianship.

The ability to create an interesting piece of music and play it with feeling. Doesn't matter how good you are or bad as long as someone likes it.

i have that same problem, kindof.
i play at my bassists house every weekend (always parties over there) and theres always a bucnh of people there who say they play guitar, but all they do are play the same song over and over, just play as fast as they can, always sounds like ****. and they think thats the only thing that makes a good guitarist, is speed.

No technical ability is going to instantly transform you into a 'good guitarist'. I think its something you learn, just from spending time with your guitar. It's hard to define, but the ability to channel your emotion through playing the guitar seems a good definition.

Like, for me, Tears in Heaven DESTROYS most other songs because of its sheer emotion. Same as my love for Nirvana songs.

Although someone said to me before that what makes a good guitarist, is never thinking you are a good guitarist. Cliched yes, but it makes sense.

Technical ability. I believe that makes a good guitarist. The ability to play music is a skill of a musician, is it not?
#26
i think being able to just pick up a guitar and playing any kind of riff(metal, rock, blues, country, etc.) and playing it good just like if you can jam of the top of your head
#27
A guitarist who plays sooo emotionally and can make any man cry
and yet, can also play aggressively like your going to die any second

Examples for me.....Kirk Hammet, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend

for me a good guitarist is in the technique, but a good musician has the passion/soul/ability to make the crowd feel the music
Technique is made for your criteria of a good musician.

I was about to say all of the above, but not really to whammy bar or harmonics.

It depends what your forte is.

What makes a good guitarist?

Those skills yes, but also the band around him.

And the most important one of those skills is, of course, the use of the whammy bar.

a good guitarist is one with creativity and is good all around, knows his guitar and its capablilities, and demonstrates the fact that he can keep you entertained with movement and good playing.

Really? I would much rather have our egotistical musicians like Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Andres Segovia (the most influential guitarist of all), Frank Sinatra or Django Reinhardt, than nice friendly people who are mediocre.

If I was in a band with JS Bach, I'd hate him. That's the difference. Mozart was by definition a SOLO performer. I think that comment meant something more along the lines of "I wouldn't want a god-like dick playing in a band with me."

Being able to think of something different and unique, having his/her own style of playing that seperates them from any others. And the versitility to make a mistake and cover it up well enough to make it sound good. ETC.
