alright, pretty much as the title says. i need a subwoofer. But not just any subwoofer, i need one that can blast out notes as low as 5Hz, and do it quite loud. Loud enough for me to feel the vibrations. this is for a science project, and i would really like some help. thanks

you're gonna need something about 15" to 18" (yes, they do make them). but the problem would be finding an amp to put out that frequency (supposing you find the right speaker).

The Thigpen will produce the note, but your right, I need an amp that will make it louder without destroying itself

MTX makes a woofer with an extra deep cone, puts out low frequencies alot louder than normal woofers. but i don't think it'll do 5.

Yea, any quality 15 - 18 inch speaker will handle it. It's all about the amp though and how much it pushes through that speaker.

ya, but they didnt go loud enough. i watched the episode and saw 2 flaws

1: there subwoofer wasnt clear enough, it was straining to reach 5Hz
2: it wasnt loud enough. you cant hear it, but you have to feel it

The fact that the frequency response of the camera's mic's is only around 20Hz-20KHz is probably the reason you can't hear it. From my memory of that episode, things were vibrating all over the place.
The resonant frequency of the human body is around 3Hz, play a note around that frequency and get nice and close to the sub.
And for the record, most subs will be able to play a 5Hz note, they just end up destroying themselves doing it. Get a cheap 15" sub with a high power handling (less likely of burning out the voice coils) and feed it with a fair bit of power from an amp with no low-pass filter.

The fact that 5Hz is below the human hearing range might have something to do with it as well

id give up, if mythbusters cant do it then neither can you.
you'd also need more than one sub to do it and im guessing it would cost way to much.

Hmm, I think you need something along these lines.
