What makes a song a ballad? I thought ballads were those 80 hair metal songs by bands like whitesnake, but now that you brought metallica into this, I need an explanation.
I'm a stupid jackass.

They typically are, but songs such as Cemetery Gates and In This River are basically just those type of songs by the more modern, heavier bands.

X-Japan has some of the best ballads. And they are true ballads, with piano, the cheesy ballad-style drumming, violins, you name it. Their original music style is speed + heavy metal (early).

Wintersun's songs are indeed great and epic.

None of those are ballads. Except i guess you could say A Tout Le Monde somewhat. But under my understanding (and please dont flame me) a ballad is a love song. Thats just word on the street though.

Yes.

Fiddler on the Green by Demons and Wizards is probably the best metal ballad ever written. Simply beautiful. I suppose that one was sort of destined to be hit-or-miss, because Blind Guardian ballads are usually fantastic, and Iced Earth ballads are usually terrible.

I just can't stand how they're EXACTLY THE SAME. It makes Something Wicked... a chore to listen to, because Melancholy, Watching Over Me and Blessed Are You are virtually the same song - each consists of one little acoustic noodly bit (not really a 'riff' as such in most cases), a cheesy-as-hell chorus with just two chords backing it, and a very short solo or lead bit. Chorus repeats and fades out. Alright, there's a little extra in Blessed Are You, but for the most part they're all I Died For You clones, and they're just so simplistic it makes me mad. I guess it's just cos I'm just a prog-head.
