The other day I was watching T.V quite late and I was flicking through the music channels and found something that shocked me to still to my chair; Sign language interpreters interpreting music lyrics.

This has to be the most useless job as a sign language interpreter, why do they think deaf people want to hear the lyrics in sign language to Rihanna’s Umbrella by a fat bald man looking like a pillock. And if doing the lyrics isn’t as bad enough he even does the guitar solo, Whose idea was this? Did they get bombarded with emails from deaf people demanding to hear the lyrics in good ol’ sign language fashion, I doubt it and if there are any deaf people who did want this I’m afraid you will have to stay up till 4am to see it unfortunately.

Most deaf people can read anyway so what’s wrong with subtitles? I feel compelled to phone the company and tell them how it’s such an inane idea and how they are a bunch of fools who think they’re doing something good but in fact they probably aren’t.

Has anyone else saw this and does anyone agree with it? I know it’s not a big subject but it’s really pissed me off.

I've seen it too. Although im never entirely convinced they are doing proper sign language. I think they are doing some sort of interpretive dance.

it doesn't matter what you think because you're not deaf and therefore not their target audience, and besides sign language is to deaf people what spoken language is to us. You would much rather hear lyrics than read them wouldn't you

It's probably people being overly PC and thinking they need to go out of the way to satisfy anyone that has potential to yell "discrimination"; I don't think too many deaf people care enough to demand something like this.

But...they can't hear the music

So why would they be watching a music channel?

because I know a deaf person who says so (yes I know he can't really say it but you know what I mean)

although there probably aren't that much people interested in it
#16
Deaf people can be interested in music, as they can feel the vibrations from bassy components of the music. If these bassy components have sufficinetly interesting rythyms, than deaf people surely can enjoy music.

That being said of course, if they are fully deaf they obviously can't hear the lyrics being sung!

I suppose if the lyrics are interesting from a poetic standpoint, that could also be a reason. However, why not just google the lyrics if you are deaf and want to know what they are.

On the other hand, perhaps this situation is not meant to be analyzed, but rather laughed at from a safe distance...

Okay would you rather look up lyrics by reading them or have someone tell you them? No that's why i don't use Microsoft Sam.
#18
It never fails to amuse me how the sign language things are usually only on at at 1am in the morning, as if deaf people are nocturnal or something.
Funny words.

theoretically speaking there really isn't any difference between telling and singing. The interpreters probably "tell" the lyrics rhytmly (sp?)

If that's the case, then why the hell was he signing "Umbrella?"

What is the sign?
#23
I saw that and thought 'I bet he isn't even doing the proper sign language, if a deaf person sees that they're gonna get so many phone calls complaining about it'

it was about 3 minutes later that I realised how stupid that was.

It does piss me off kinda. I mean, it's all very well having sign language, but WHY? They can use subtitles perfectly well, if not better. Why should the rest of us be forced to watch it with some **** taking up the bottom corner of the screen and blocking everything I wanna see?

Plus the fact it's on ****ing MUSIC, that's just retarded. I don't wanna offend anyone, but come on. What's the ****ing point?
#32
Someone should take a picture of one on the music channels, i would but i haven't got a camera.
#33

What's the point? If they really care what the lyrics are, can't they just read them or something?

Christ, that's hilarious

It's actually quite handy for those of us trying to learn sign language. In a sing you generally have a better idea of the lyrics and it's also easier to find them on the internet, as opposed to show transcriptions where there's a signer.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

So...

Having signed music on TV late at night isn't for the deaf at all, it's for people to learn sign language late at night to metalcore songs?
