I'm trying to learn how to count rhythm properly. And I'm really struggling! It takes me 1 hour to learn 4 measures properly! My head also hurts like hell! Is this normal or do I just suck?

A bit unfair, he did say it was syncopated.

Don't over complicate it, break it down into small parts and only count subdivisionw when you need to.

What I find is helpful is to get some manuscript paper (blank sheet music), and transcibe the rhythm, making sure you use the correct time sig, note values and rests. Forget about the melody for now. Also, include a markers under the bar to show where each beat will fall.

Then, put your metronome right down to really slow, and keep working on it, and be sure to count out loud using the right beat divisions (by beat divisions, I mean "1...2..3..4.. or 1+2+3+4 or 1e+a...2e+a...3e+a etc).

You'll get it, trust me.

Good job! Yes, counting out the rhythm properly, syncopated or not, is hard at
first. It will get easier. Most people just don't do this and guess (usually wrongly).

Just take it slow at first. You just have to keep doing it and you'll begin to remember
how various rhythm notations go. Then, it starts getting easier.

I meant subdivisions. Typo.

If a bar is 2 quarter notes and then 8 16th notes, count 1 2 3e+a4e+a.
Dont count the subdivisions on the 1st and 2nd beats because you aren't playing anything. Counting then is pointless

And yes you should count rests.
