so my guitaring has kind of gotten a little too routine. I want something to play that is a little bit of a challenge but not to incredibly hard.

right now i find myself playing:
Six- All that remains
Dying In Your Arms- Trivium
Lip Gloss and Black - Atreyu
Chapter 4- Avenged Sevenfold

all of which (with the exception of Chapter 4) I play with the solos.

any suggestions as to what i can play within the metal and metalcore genres?

Agreed. There's no point in doing anything if she looks like shit.

learn some dream theater to really challenge you

or pantera or lamb of god (some songs really challenging)

see i tried lamb of god (mainly laid to rest) and wasn't having fun playing it. i would really like something that has some catchy riffs, maybe a small solo.

yep... and..

learning dream theater songs will:

1) help you learn awesome songs
2) help you develop all the guitar skills/techniques you could want (its up to you to take them further if you want... i.e. sweeping like yngwie)
3) overall improve your guitar playing.

same goes for just listening to DT.

dream theater.

john petrucci is a beast. look them up....

and if youre into the heavier, metal-sounding music, you should probably start with their album "Train of Thought".... i was into really heavy music, so i didnt like their other stuff at first... loved train of thought though. then i got into the rest, and ive left the uber-heavy stuff behind (but i still love tot)

[latest album is pretty heavy too. Systematic Chaos]

Yeah Dream Theater are pretty sweet. I'm not their biggest fan, cause I think that sometimes they spam notes, but I like most of their stuff. And John Petrucci is just insane, learning his stuff will really push you.

On the other hand if you want something easier, try Revolution Is My Name by Pantera. That's mediumly tricky. I'd have reccommended LOG but it seems you're not too keen on them. Although, if you want a rather tricky riff, learn the breakdown/vomit riff in Hourglass by Lamb Of God. Quite a tricky riff.
