So i'm writing a paper on immigration. You have to come up with a question to base your paper on, and a thesis statement before the actual paper starts. This is what I have come up with.

How has Immigration effected the Economy of the United States in the 21st Century?

Thesis: By examining the immigration phenomenon of the 21st century, we can evaluate its effect on the United States economy.

I'm sure it sucks. But if anyone in here could possibly take this thread seriously, any advice would be awsome..

be more specific with either your thesis, question, or both.

Perhaps, illegal vs legal immigration
different areas, different ethnic groups, different parts of the economy. I'm not sure whether your teacher would agree with me, but I think that your thesis is too general.

Oh yeah, and if guitar hero got you into the guitar? you're really playing for the wrong reasons.

there is no wrong reason to play a guitar, except for world enslavement and extermination of certain races, but those guys never make it big anyway.

i think you should state whether you believe it has a positive or negative effect, or both. its a good thesis to me because its clear, concise, and it limits the topic specifically to what you want to talk about. you should also try to limit it to a certain part of the US or an ethnicity

we're studying theses in AP Language and Composition (aka English 101)

In thesis statements, it's good to state something specific. What you have is just a restatement of the question. Maybe do something like "Immigration in the U.S. has caused a boom in the industrial and service areas of the economy." (I don't know if that's correct, I'm just giving an example.) That way, you show how the economy was changed, like the question asks.
#5
I think you will get a better effect by using proper english, this would mean ussing the word affected opposed to effected, and affect opposed to effect which is not the right word for this situation.
#6
Yeah... that's a damn ****ty thesis. It doesn't outline what you're trying to prove. Expand.
#7
i can elaborate like 30 pages of **** on that

but, in portuguese lol

like, the US doesnt have enough people to do "mid-qualification" jobs where you dont need to be all majored up to do, the 2nd line services for example, just so you have an idea of what to look into, i cant say anything else cuz, i dont speak enough english to lol

your thesis statement is supposed to sum up the basic theme of your paper and should contain your major argument(s) or idea(s), like rockon said, yours is just the question restated

How many 12oz. cups of beer are in a keg?

Thesis: By examining three different kegs from three different breweries, we can truely understand exactly how many beers are in a keg.

alright I dont know of this is any better, but I revised and made the topic a little bit more clear.

How has Illegal Immigration affected the Job Market of the United States in the 21st Century?

Thesis: By examining job placement, wages, and education of illegal immigrants in the United States, we can analyze the job market of the 21st century.

That's a little better, but you're still not saying how it changed the job market. You've just added where. You have to put the extent which it changed it, and whether that's good or bad for the U.S. job market.
#14
The problem with that is it doesn't actually say anything. Of course we can tell its effect by examining it. Basically, you're saying, "if we look at it, we will be able to see it" and I don't think you can write a whole paper proving that point.

Have your thesis statement say something about what those effects are.

Thesis: Job placement, wage variance, and sub par education in immigrants have been major contributors to the turnover of the job market in the United States, in the 21st century.

What a shitty bump, there are a million articles and websites out there explaining how to write proper college level essays just a google search away. Why don't you noobs get off UG and go do some actual research? the amount of educational thread bumps is ridiculous. Brb using UG as your work cited source...
