alright you guys have never failed me on math problems before so here goes.
a plane is 5000 miles away and coming in at 700mph.
after 15 mins, an interceptor is sent towards it at 800mph.
how long will it take them to meet?
if anyone could point me in the right direction (ie what equation to use) I would me grateful. lulz
distance speed and time i think?

s = v * t

write down the distance for both the plane and the interceptor (take the "after 15 minutes" as having the time as "t-15min")

then make distance plane = distance interceptor and solve for time

edit: wait, its coming from the other direction
in which case just put a negative velocity for one of them and figure a way to put that 5000 miles away in there

location of interceptor = 800mph * (t - 15min)

5000miles - 700mph * t = 800mph * (t - 15min)

5000miles - 700mph * t = 800mph * t - 200miles
t * 1500 mph = 5200 miles
t= 5200 miles/1500 mph = 3.47 hours

Ok, basically plane is 5000 miles away...it travels at 700mph for 15 mins, therefore the distance it travels before the interceptor is sent is 700 / 4 = 175

so plane is 5000 - 175 = 4825 miles away when the interceptor is sent.

The interceptor is 4825 miles away when it is sent and travels at 800 mph.

the planes are travelling towards each other so you have 800 and 700 mph as the speeds, which combine to make 1,500 mph the speed at which the distance between the planes decreases.

So you divide 4825 by 1500 and that gives you 3.216 (recurring 6) hours, or roughly 3 hours and 12 minutes til the planes meet
