So yeah, i am getting a laptop and need to move all my **** to it. What would the the cheapest, most convient way of doing that.
Thanks!

crossover ethernet cable
or regular network of whatever kind (i'd recommend regular over wifi)
USB 2.0 link cable (if only USB 1. don't bother as it'll take forever)
Firewire link cable (probably even faster than ethernet, that is if both computers have firewire)
4 DVDRs (thats like...$2 and you'll have you're data backed up too)
or move the harddrive into the other computer, copy the stuff off then put it back where it was (edit: wait, laptop, yeah that won't work)

you have an ipod or other mp3 player that holds more than 16.65 GB? if not maybe use a flash drive to move it, but not all at once. if you don't have one a 1gb flash drive dow costs about $10-$30.

edit: yeah i forgot DVDs (assuming you have a DVD burner)
sup?

(16 gigabytes) / (100 (megabits per second)) = 21.8453333 minutes

well alright, you don't get the full 100mbit speed as there is some overhead that has to be sent, but it still shouldn't be more than an hour

you need to get a special link cable to do it
so if there is no native support in XP, there would be some kind of driver/app provided with the cable
(it seems that support is there in Vista and I'm pretty sure about Mac's being capable of doing it)
no idea how it works between OSs

Im getting one and going through the tedious process of doing exactly what you're doing this weekend.

external harddrive i would say would be easiest. cheapest would be ethernet or a usb cable. worst come to worst 18 trips using a 1 gb memory stick.
ehh
#24
Id just use my Sony walkman as a hard drive and do it that way, do the same with your iPod, im sure it appears in My computer?...drag and drop, then the same onto the other pc.

I did the same when I got my macbook, just delete everything on your iPod, enable disk use and just put the files on the iPod and transfer.

Its the exact same with PCs

crossover ethernet cable and a simple home network. worked for me and I transferred something like 96 gigs... took a few hours
#31
I would think investing in a external hard drive might be good.
100$ for like 120gb
You can use it for back up, and it will last long er then a couple of DVDs

But if you just need some cheep-o way of doing it, dvds

buy a hard drive enclosure (about $20 for pata/ide, $40 if you have an sata drive). it'll plug into your usb drive and work like an external drive. use a program like "carbon copy cloner" or "superduper!" if you're on a mac. i don't know a pc equivalent though. then swap them. and you now have an external drive as well.

Probably already been said a million times, but find where your music files are located and put them on your ipod in a FILE, not through itunes. afterwards, cut + paste into file on ur laptop and drag the files onto itunes and voila! you have musak.
