How many strings does your main bass have? Main as in the one you use for gigs.

EDIT: I used boxes in the case that you may have more than one main bass.

I'm sticking with four for a while, at least until they come up with 5 string p-bass, with a P-Style Pup. (this might be a while)

I don't get it... why do people whose threads require more than 1 option to be selected (i.e. what style you play, fingers, pick, etc) constantly use radio buttons while people who make a poll requiring EXACTLY 1 response use checkboxes? I could have checked off every box for my 'main bass'.

4 for me, but I wouldn't mind stepping up to a 5 soon.

You should. It was confusing to me the first time I played one but my bass teacher let me use his sometimes if we had extra time left in the lesson, and my new Stiletto Deluxe-5 came in the mail on Thursday and I was like "Damn! This is easy!"

I thought they did? I'm sure I've played one before.

Arg! There was a 5-string American Deluxe P-Bass that was available for years and years (with a bridge humbucker - my favourite!) and Fender discontinued it this year. I guess nobody was buying it!

DAMN BLOODY FENDER.

I don't really play Fenders, so I don't know what's been discontinued

Goddam it! I'm actually angry now. All the ones that I saw had the P-neck and the P-body but with soapbar pickups. I have even been told the P-pup isn't very conducive to a 5 string if you think about it. Fuck Fuck Fuck. I'm gunna have to look into this matter.
#16
I had an ibanez sr305 for a few years, but I sold it. My tiny hands have trouble with the extra neck width and I just feel so much more comfortable with a four string.
#17
I'm feeling better now, because after 15 of searching the internet, I have only seen 5 string p-basses with the p-neck, p-body and with the soapbar pick-ups, no split coil 5-strings...yet...I hope

Bartolini make a 5 string P type...
http://www.bartolini.net/information/bass/new_bass_pu_s5.htm

...so I'm guessing it'll be high-end basses. (Or make one)
Wilkinson used to do a 4 to 5 conversion for J's and P's which put the 5th machine head underneath the head like a Stingray. Worked perfectly well with stock pups.

But anyway, I'm all 4's atm. I'd like a 5...and a 6....and an 8...and a 12...

SANTA???? lol

Sometimes I adopt a 22 string style approach in my playing.

In all seriousness, 4 strings.

I only own four string basses atm, but I'm soon to get a 5er. I don't imagine I'll use it much, unless I string it to have a high C rather than a low B.

I have 4.

While somewhat unusual people do use high B's. I find it's mostly because coming over from guitar, the transition would be way too confusing. All the scales and chord shapes they learnt wouldn't be the same and would **** up their brain. Therefore, they just go with a B.

You may find this funny, but I'm not even kidding about this. In fourth grade, we had to make a musical instrument for science class (this was LONG before I became a bassist). My dad and I carved a fish shape out of wood (in the shape of a bass) and nailed 8 nails into the top of it. I attached 4 rubber bands to it, and played "bass" like a steel guitar. It's funny, because I had NO idea what a bass guitar even was at that point. Small world, isn't it?

BTW, "Mary had a little lamb" was the song I had to play in front of the class.. how metal is that?

EDIT: I was a "bass"ist before I even knew it.
