Hey
I have a question for everyone

What do you think is real guitar skill?

I really think it is how well you can make up your own songs and solos... but that is me lets discuss

They did this less than a week ago. They decided that real guitarists use the Search Bar.

steve vai, joe satriani, steve ray vaughn and malmsteen all have great songwriting skill.

you need creativity to be able to write EPIC songs and/or solos.

i think it has to do with technical skill i.e. accuracy, speed, stamina.

songwriting and creativity are gifts that come without guitar skills.
#9
Being able to make something beautiful instead of harsh sounds on the guitar.

Making music. That's skill.
#10
Skill is when you can play any kind of music with anybody and sound good, having soul helps, but yeah, one man's opinion
#14
I don't know about guitar, but I'll sleep with you if you can sing "Oh Girl" by the Chi-Lites. It has to sound good though...well, maybe not.

You must be able to sweep pick C#min7 arpeggios with your teeth, while holding the guitar upside down behind your head.

He's right. If you can sweep pick a C#min7 arpeggio with your teeth behind your head, you win.

You win life.

and ability to make every solo sound different, which is somethin i cant do

i say creativity in their songs..take RHCP for instance...john rocks like hell, his solos are so ****king easy yet so dam ****king amazing to the ears...

to me it doesn't matter whether you can shred or whatever,to me its how creative you can write you songs or solos, and how nice they sound...

To spread positive energy via your playing, no matter what style of music you play.

To do that you must also have a wierd head...how can you play with your teeth behind your head...you'd need alien style mouth parts...

but yeah I think that you need innovation in your playing (while it still sounding good)

To say more with one note then soulless shredders can say with 1000.

That, my NorseGodofRock friend, was the best post in this thread.

It doesn't matter what you think skill is. What matters is that you make music.

If you make good music, you have skills.

Being able to produce the sounds in your head, and get them out to your fingers and through the guitar. That's what skill is, it doesn't matter what those sounds are, if they're the ones you want to make and it's true artistic expression for you, that's real skill. I also think that being able to play things that one would deem "non-conventional" is a huge plus, at least for me, and I think it's people that are doing both of these things that will push the modern rock music scene forward, groups like; Chiodos, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, The Fall of Troy, Vanna, Every Time I Die, and Tool. I'm not saying they will get huge, but I think their impact will be immeasurable.
