alternate picking. and speed isn't necassarily important as long as the solo sounds good against its backing.

i agree, speed isn't everything, but i've been playing a lot of faster, metal stuff, i can play the slow solos, where you play a short lick, then play another,

play scales slow along with a metronome, start at around 70, then move up 3 every time you've nailed it, keep going till you reach your limit, probably around 100-110

(taken from john petrucci's rock discipline DVD)

okay, i'll try that, but then i'll just be playing the scale, how would i go from there to mixing it up a lot????

try and play a really hard bit of a solo and practise it up and up and up .... until you can do it then attempt some other soloing it wont seem half as hard

Learn the Pentatonics Minor scale, it's the easist scale to learn to solo from (in my opinion), your solos will all most likely sound bluesy from the pentatonic, but it makes it easier to write good solos from other scales once you've practiced at it.

practice lots of arpeggios easy or hard, and learn to alt pick. helps alot

Good soloing comes easily if you know basic music theory, like myself it is easy for me to solo because i can rattle off in my head what scales can work, what notes will produce a suspensful effect and what possible notes i can end the solo on for a good resolve. Then i just listen to a bunch of guitar greats (of all genres) and try to imitate them and so i have a great lick background that i can throw in to the solo game when ever i see fit.
So i say practice SCALES, LICKS, and learn so BASIC MUSIC THEORY.

every scale is usefull, you can do wonder with a simple C major scale, what you need is to start creating licks mixing thechniques that you know, start slowly (if you start fast you're going to get nowhere but sloppy land)

start learnig solos, it'll give you ideas and make a little base to star your own solos

No, you probably don't know a load of scales. You've probably memorized some
finger positions, but don't know much about how to use a scale. If you did, you'd
know 1 scale used with skill is most likely all you'd need for a good solo and it
doesn't really have anything to do with speed.
